Enemies hoping to trap Jesus into saying something treasonous ask him whether to pay taxes to Caesar. If he says yes, well, that is collaborating with the hated Empire; on the other hand, if he says no, that is a crime. So he asks for a coin, holds it and says “Whose picture is this on the coin?” Then he tells listeners (including us!) to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. But Jesus isn’t describing a "sacred-secular divide", which is a false dichotomy. He is reminding people of love that everything is of God, that Caesar’s power is limited and temporary, and that all areas of life can be sacred— ordinary, worldly activities can possess deep spiritual value.
