Pastor Bob’s Moment

Staying Young

The Bible makes it clear, life is sacred and holy, a gift to be celebrated and treasured. The observance of the rebirth of the earth’s life in Spring makes us again aware of the “gift.” In a painful way the death of someone close to us in our family, church, or community also helps us remember how wonderful, precious and fragile life is.

My family gathered Tuesday, May 20 to celebrate the life of my Uncle Vern, to remember and celebrate his wit, his wisdom, the gifts of his life shared. We heard the words of scripture that sustained Vern, the hymns and music he loved. In our prayers we remembered him as our brother in Christ. When the service ended, we walked with him one last time, as we commended him to God. We departed Faith Lutheran Church to continue our lives, aware that we the living have the gift of life to share.

My brother Pastor Dan serves a Lutheran church in Twin Falls, Idaho. Dan recently sent me this e-mail titled Staying Young:

  • Throw out non-essential numbers . This includes age, weight and height. Let your doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him/her.
  • Keep cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.
  • Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain go idle. An idle mind is evil’s workshop.
  • Enjoy the simple things.
  • Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.
  • The tears happen. Endure, grieve and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life is ourselves. Be Alive as long as you live!
  • Surround yourself with what you love, whether it is family, pets, music, plants, or hobbies. Your home is your refuge.
  • Cherish your health. If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.
  • Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, to the next county, to another country, but not to where the guilt is.
  • Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

Always remember, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

“The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ our Lord”

Pentecost (fifty days after Passover) found the disciples again gathered in Jerusalem. During Passover Jesus had shared a last meal with his friends, was arrested, tried, crucified, buried, and rose from the dead. For forty days Jesus walked, taught, ate, and inspired his disciples. Then on the fortieth day he ascended into heaven. The disciples, following Jesus’ instructions, went to Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost. And there, once again in the upper room they were. Jesus had explained much, yet they were still uncertain. How were they to fulfill his command to go into all nations, making disciples, and baptizing? With a great gust of wind the Holy Spirit, sent by Jesus, blew through the room. It filled the hearts and minds of all present. Suddenly they knew how to do the task given them. Suddenly they were full of hope, knowledge, and skill. So they went forth, preaching, teaching, healing, and living the good news.

“We are Christ’s new creation by water and the word”

On Pentecost we celebrate the creation of the church. We rejoice in our foundation – Jesus Christ. It is a special time filled with significance. And so we rejoice to celebrate the rite of Confirmation. Confirmation is the time when people take on for themselves the vows made by parents at baptism. An important part is becoming a member of the congregation. It is the realization of years of Christian nurture. The teaching and sharing of faith by parents, Sunday School teachers, members in church, and friends hopes for this maturing of the person’s faith. What joy to be part of this occasion!

“One name together blessing, one holy food we share”

This year we have 15 students who desire to be confirmed. The Confirmation service will on Sunday, June 8 – Pentecost. All who have promised to support and nurture these children when they were baptized, all who have watched them as they grow, are encouraged to be present on. The schedule for worship that weekend is:

Saturday, June 7 at 5:00 p.m. – Holy Communion

Sunday, June 8 at 8:00 a.m. – Holy Communion & radio broadcast

Sunday, June 8 at 10:00 a.m. – Holy Communion & Confirmation

May we be renewed in our faith as we celebrate this special occasion.

“at one in work and prayer”

Yours in Christ, Pastor Denise

Thanks

From Pastor Bob Sr. and Gladys Rieke and family

Thank you for your expressions of love and sympathy at the unexpected and sudden death of brother Vern Rieke. The May 20 service was a celebration of his life on earth. Our comfort and peace is knowing he is now with our Lord in heaven.

From Pastor Denise

Thank You! Thanks to all who remembered my birthday. The greetings, well-wishes, and singing made the day extra special. I truly appreciate your thoughtfulness.

From Galen Alwin

Thank you to Pastors Denise and Bob, and to everyone who sent cards, visited, or called while I was in the hospital and at home recovering from appendicitis. We have a great congregation!

From Samantha Steffen

Thank you very much for the scholarship. This money will help me a lot with my education. I will be attending UW-Richland this fall, majoring in elementary education or massage therapy. Thank you again for your generosity.

From Kevin Larsen

I am grateful to have been selected as a recipient of your scholarship. This gift will assist me in continuing my education. I will be attending the UW-Platteville this fall, majoring in agricultural marketing or animal science. Through your generosity, young people such as myself are given a helping hand to dwindle the cost of higher education and I greatly appreciate that help.

From Girl Scout Troop 1006

Thank you so much for allowing us to use the church for our meetings. We’ve had a great year.

From Lola Huber

Thank you so much for asking me to speak at your Mother/ Daughter Banquet. Showing off my lamps was truly a pleasure. Your group of ladies and girls were most responsive and the supper was superb. My thanks to you for a lovely evening!

Direct debit debuts

Starting this month, you can have your offering automatically transferred from your bank account to the church’s account. On the 20th of each month, the amount you have designated will be debited from your account.

To many of our members, using envelopes will remain the desired way to remit to our church. But to some, setting up direct fund transfers may be more convenient. Again setting up a “direct debit” is completely optional. There is no cost to you. There is no minimum set amount and no need to commit to this for any set length of time.

Forms to set up this electronic donation service are available on the usher’s cabinet and from the church office.

We will gather to offer our “to-be-continueds” and our best wishes at a potluck supper on Saturday, June 7 in the sanctuary basement at 5:45PM. Please bring tableware and a dish to share.
